The Board of Trustees of La Roche College
Recognizes the Outstanding Contributions
Christine Jane Spadafor, J.D., Sc. M, B.S. ’79, RN
May 9, 2015
Whereas: Christine J. Spadafor has achieved uncommon and multi-faceted success as a leader, innovator and entrepreneur — in a distinguished career spanning the worlds of academia, business and not-for-profit enterprises.
Whereas: Ms. Spadafor, a daughter of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, has made the pursuit of knowledge a lifelong passion — through formal study, applied learning, disciplined scholarship, global travel and widely diverse reading. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from La Roche College, Ms. Spadafor matriculated at Harvard University — earning advanced degrees from both the Harvard School of Public Health and the Harvard Law School.
Whereas: Ms. Spadafor has shared her learning widely and well. She co-authored an authoritative medical, legal and environmental science text published by Johns Hopkins University Press. She is a frequent speaker at civic, academic and professional forums and for many years has served as a mentor to young women. Ms. Spadafor is a popular MBA lecturer in the Visiting Executive Program at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.
Whereas: Ms. Spadafor has been at the vanguard of American women in business leadership positions. She was a partner in three international management consulting firms including the prestigious Boston Consulting Group. In China, she served as a consultant to the United Nations. For more than a decade, Ms. Spadafor has managed her own international consulting firm. Ms. Spadafor was recognized by the American Bar Association as one of the top 20 U.S. female business lawyers with expertise to serve on corporate boards. And today she serves on the board of directors of Boyd Gaming Corporation, a publicly traded company listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
Whereas: Ms. Spadafor has been guided by the maxim: “To whom much has been given, much is expected.” With enduring gratitude for the example set by her devoted and generous parents, she has lived a life of service to worthy causes, and for decades has given time and treasure in support of numerous charities. In her career, Ms. Spadafor ascended to executive and leadership roles – protecting at-risk and disabled children, assuring justice to those denied it, and giving voice to those unheard. And for nearly ten years… Ms. Spadafor stepped out of her fast-track corporate career – to devote her passion and expertise to the abused, abandoned and homeless children at St. Jude’s Ranch for Children.
Whereas: Ms. Spadafor consistently honored “the small still voice” guiding her diverse intellectual interests and shaping her nontraditional vocational trajectory. Trusting in her intuition, grounded by her values, and embracing her beliefs, she embodies the courage of prudent risk-taking in the pursuit of challenging goals. Her life and career are a testament to the adventure of creating opportunities where none existed before.
Whereas: Ms. Spadafor personifies the long-established mission of La Roche College — “to be a lifelong learner, to achieve success in a chosen career and to promote justice and peace in a constantly changing global society” – she has shown herself to be an exemplary role model for the new graduates of La Roche College.
Therefore, it is unanimously resolved that the Board of Trustees of La Roche College confers upon Christine Jane Spadafor, a 1979 alumna of La Roche College, the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.
